Illinois House Passes COVID-19 Federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program Act

In the early morning hours of January 12th, 2020 the Illinois House of Representatives passed legislation which will impact housing providers statewide.

SB 3066 HAM007 and 8 will codify the states' rental assistance program, provide for the sealing of eviction records and establish a stay of foreclosure for certain properties.

Many housing providers, like the people they house, may never fully recover because of the government’s response to the present pandemic. This is the unfortunate reality of the Governor's eviction moratoriums which only exacerbate the growing debt for everyone involved. IMHA believes this new statute, which becomes law upon the Governor's signature, will serve to harm the very tenants the legislature is seeking to help as the quantity and quality of available and affordable rental housing in Illinois becomes even more diminished.
